Interview phrase of the day

Confident English is mostly a small set of phrases used at the right moment. One a day, each with the hedged version it replaces — because you cannot fix “I think maybe I kind of helped” until you have something to say instead.

“I took that on.”

When to use it: Describing volunteering for something nobody owned.
Instead of: "Nobody was doing it so somehow I ended up doing it…"
In an answer: “The audit prep had no owner. I took that on and had the binder ready ten days early.”

Opening an answer

The short version is…replaces "So, basically, it's a bit of a long story, but…"
I'll give you one example.replaces "I am a person who works well under pressure."
There are two parts to that.replaces "Umm, okay, so, regarding the first thing you asked…"
My background in one line: …replaces "First of all, I would like to thank you for this opportunity. I was born in…"
The most relevant experience I have is…replaces "I have done many things, as you can see in my CV…"
Let me start with the outcome.replaces "So it started when… and then… and then… and finally…"
Happy to walk you through it.replaces "Yes, sure, I mean, I can try to explain, if you want."

The way I approached it was…replaces "So, first I did this, and then I did that…" with no frame.

Owning what you did

I decided to…replaces "I think maybe I kind of helped to decide…"

Stating results

Clarifying the question

Just to make sure I answer the right question — do you mean…?replaces "Sorry, I did not understand, can you repeat?"
Can I take that in two parts?replaces Answering only the half you remember.
Let me check I have this right: …replaces Starting to answer while still unsure of the scenario.
Give me a second to think about that.replaces "Umm… uh… so… yeah… that's a good question…"
Are you asking about the process, or the outcome?replaces Giving a 4-minute answer to a 1-minute question.

Recovering mid-answer

Let me say that more simply.replaces "Sorry, sorry, what I mean is, sorry…"
The word I'm looking for is… — anyway, the point is…replaces A ten-second silence while you search.
To come back to your question…replaces Continuing to drift and ending with "…so, yeah."
In plain terms, …replaces Repeating the same jargon more slowly.
I lost my thread for a moment — the point was…replaces Pretending nothing happened while visibly panicking.
Let me give you a concrete example.replaces "…I am very organised and detail-oriented, and also a team player…"
I don't know that one. Here's what I'd do to find out.replaces Guessing, or a long apology.
The honest answer is…replaces A vague answer that the interviewer can tell is being shaped.

Disagreeing politely

I see it a little differently.replaces "Yes, you are right, of course, sir."
I'd push back on that, respectfully.replaces "I did not agree but I kept quiet because he is the manager."
The trade-off is…replaces "I think this option is better, maybe."
I raised it directly with…replaces "I told my colleagues about the problem."
We agreed to…replaces "In the end he understood that I was right."
I'd want to see the data first.replaces "Maybe, I am not sure, it depends, you know."
Here's what I'd do differently.replaces "It was not perfect, but it was okay."

Closing and asking
